He was a member of the TÜRK-İŞ Presidential Council and served on the General Assembly of the Press Advertising Agency. Akkaya held the position of deputy chairman of the CHP responsible for professional organizations, trade unions, and other civil society organizations. He was also a member of the Turkish parliament in the 26th term representing Istanbul.
