Educated at Beijing Women's Normal University and later at Nanjing National School of Drama, she joined the theatre professionally, even defying her father. She performed in various plays during the Sino-Japanese War and continued her career post-war in prestigious theatres. Ye joined the Beijing People's Art Theatre in 1950 and acted in notable productions. She served as a representative in the Beijing Municipal People's Congress. Ye passed away on August 26, 2012, at the age of 101.
