Yevgeny Chertovsky was a Russian inventor and engineer associated with the Aviation Medical Institute. In 1931, he designed the first pressure suit, known as a spacesuit, in Leningrad. He participated in the early Soviet stratospheric balloon program and co-authored the stratospheric balloon Osoaviachim-1, which suffered a crash during a record attempt in January 1934. Chertovsky improved his suits over several years, developing the CH-3, which allowed greater movement for pilots. He also coined the term 'spacesuit' by merging Greek words meaning 'ship' and 'man'.
