He served as a professor in the Heat Physics and Thermal Energy of Metallurgical Production department and was the scientific head of a problem laboratory at the Pryazovskyi State Technical University. Kapustin was the rector of the Zhdanov Metallurgical Institute from 1969 to 1981 and was a member of the Committee for State Prizes in Science and Technology in Ukraine. He was also an honorary doctor of the University of Miskolc.
