He has held significant roles such as the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha and Defence Secretary of India. Additionally, he served as the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh and Surface Transport Secretary. Presently, he is the Chancellor of Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University in Uttrakhand. Narain also served as a Director at Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure from 2007 to 2017.
