He specialized in 20th-century American novels, known for his translations of works by Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and post-war authors like Philip Roth and John Updike. Born in Tokyo, he graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1951 and later worked at several universities, including Ibaraki University, Chuo University, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He had a notable career in academia and was the father of celebrated American literature scholar Yōichirō Miyamoto.
