Yoshiko Tōma is a prominent Japanese politician from Ōmuta, Fukuoka, born in 1949. After completing her education at Keio University, she began her political career by being elected to the Tokorozawa City Council in 1979. Although she faced setbacks in her political aspirations when she lost the Tokorozawa mayoral election in 1991 and the national lower house election in 1996, Tōma achieved success by being elected to the Saitama Prefectural Assembly in 1999. In a historic achievement, she became the first woman to serve as mayor of Tokorozawa in October 2007.
