Ype Poortinga was a Frisian writer born on May 28, 1910, in Rinsumageast. He studied German at the University of Groningen and became known for his dissertation on Frisian folk theater. Poortinga worked as a scientific collaborator at the Fryske Akademy and later served as its deputy director. He was involved in the Frisian dialect Bible translation and collected folk tales for the Meertens Institute. For his historical novel Elbrich, he received the Gysbert Japicx prize. He passed away on December 2, 1985, in Leeuwarden.
