She competed in the 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympics, achieving a bronze medal in 1984 and finishing fourth in 1988. After attending Shoin Junior and Senior High School, she joined Hitachi Ltd. where she became the team captain in 1979. Maruyama's contributions to volleyball have made her a notable figure in the sport's history in Japan.
