Yvonne Clays Spoelders was a Belgian aristocrat and the First Lady of Costa Rica from 1940 to 1944. Born on June 3, 1906, in Antwerp, she was educated in Belgium, France, and Great Britain. She married future president Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia in 1927. Clays actively supported social causes and was instrumental in reestablishing the National Symphony Orchestra and becoming Costa Rica's first female diplomat. She facilitated significant agreements between Costa Rica and the United States during her husband's presidency and was involved in agricultural initiatives. She passed away in San José in 1994.
