She holds a degree in Political Science from Indiana University and completed her postgraduate studies at the University of Exeter, University of London, and the American University in Cairo. She worked as Deputy Director of Planning in Abu Dhabi and as a Cultural Programs Supervisor at Dubai TV. Khamis, who has lived in Cairo since 1989, served as a research diplomat at the Arab League, being the first Emirati ambassador to represent the League in India.
