He specializes in discrete mathematics and has served as a professor and dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań from 1999 to 2005. Palka was the president of the Polish Mathematical Society from 2003 to 2005 and has also held the position of prorector at the Greater Poland School of Social and Economic Studies in Środa Wielkopolska.
