Zé da Velha gained fame in 1958 for his work with Pixiguinha, Donga, and João da Baiana in the Velha-Guarda group. He accompanied Jacob do Bandolim in 1965 and has collaborated with notable Brazilian artists like Paulo Moura, Beth Carvalho, Martinho da Vila, Luiz Melodia, Tim Maia, and Elza Soares throughout his illustrious career.
