Zhang Hongbao was a Chinese entrepreneur and spiritual leader born on January 5, 1954, in Harbin, Heilongjiang. He founded Zhong Gong, a Qigong-based new religious movement, and claimed to lead the Chinese democracy movement. In 1999, the Chinese government labeled Zhong Gong a cult, prompting Zhang to seek asylum in the U.S. He faced serious accusations from former members of sexual assault under the guise of spiritual healing. Zhang died in a vehicle accident in Arizona on July 31, 2006, and no significant activities of Zhong Gong have been reported since.
