He is a researcher in Confucianism, economics, and traditional Chinese medicine, and is recognized as a successor of various schools, including Yunmen Zen, Eastern Daoism, Nanhua Esotericism, and the Mingcheng school. He is particularly noted for his contributions to Chinese medicine through the classification of 'hot and cold' and for introducing the Five Arts to Japan. He is also known by the pseudonym Zhang Yaowen.
