Ziya Şanal is a Turkish civil engineer born on March 3, 1956, in Balıkesir, Turkey. He was educated in Germany, where he obtained his doctorate in civil engineering from Ruhr University Bochum in 1985, publishing several books in engineering mathematics. He served as a professor at Munich University of Applied Sciences and was appointed the founding rector of the Turkish-German University in Istanbul by Turkish President Abdullah Gül on October 13, 2010.
