Zvi Garfunkel is an Israeli geologist born in 1938 in Kaunas. He survived the Holocaust and immigrated to Israel in 1948. He studied geology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem from 1958, earning his doctorate in 1970. After postdoctoral work in the USA, he returned to the Hebrew University, becoming a full professor in 1986 and later the R. Kravis Professor of Geology. He has received the EMET Prize for his research on the geology and tectonics of Israel, particularly the Dead Sea fault, and has been involved in various geological projects in the Eastern Mediterranean.
