Alfio Piva Mesén is a Costa Rican scientist and environmentalist, a veterinarian by profession, and holds a doctorate in animal physiology. He served as the rector of the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica and was the executive director of InBio. Piva was elected as the First Vice President of Costa Rica during Laura Chinchilla Miranda's administration from 2010 to 2014. He was born on January 7, 1940, in Goicoechea and is the son of Italian immigrant Alfio Piva Cugola.
