Her art criticized censorship, corruption, sexism, and racism through collages and montages that were both virulent and humorous, as well as bleak and visionary. One of her notable works, 'Legal Gender' (1972), highlighted the connection between political power, economics, and gender. Steckel founded the Fight Censorship Group in 1973 to advocate for the representation of male nudity in museums, promoting gender equality throughout her life.
