Anna Ivanovna Shchetinina was a Soviet commercial sailor and the first woman in the world to work as a ship captain in the ocean. Born on February 26, 1908, in Vladivostok, she started her maritime career after graduating from the Vladivostok Marine Technical School. She gained international recognition in 1935 for captaining M/V Shavitsha on its inaugural voyage. Shchetinina served during World War II and held various leadership positions throughout her career, including being the first director of Vladivostok fishing port. She received numerous honors and published a book about her experiences.
