Shimun XXIII Eshai was born on February 28, 1908, in Hakkari, Turkey, and became the Catholicos Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East, being consecrated at the young age of 11 in 1920. His leadership continued until his assassination on November 6, 1975, in San Jose, California. After being exiled to Cyprus in 1933, he settled in Chicago in 1940 and gained U.S. citizenship in 1949. His tenure was marked by controversies leading to a split in the church, although his predecessor later reconciled factions. His unexpected marriage in 1973 triggered further opposition before his assassination in 1975.
