Arthur Hollis Edens (1901-1968) was the President of Duke University from 1949 to 1960. He was the third president in the school's history and notably the first to be hired from outside the university since 1894. A native Southerner and former executive at the Rockefeller Foundation, Edens initiated a capital gifts program and a national development campaign, significantly enhancing Duke's endowment. His leadership coincided with an era of substantial growth for the university, including the opening of the Duke University Union and the establishment of new academic units and endowed professorships.
