Atnafu Abate was the head of the military committee that overthrew Emperor Haile Selassie in Ethiopia, known as the Derg. He was executed by Mengistu on November 13, 1977, following his failure in battles against the Eritrean Liberation Army, which had been besieging the capital Asmara since 1975. Abate advocated for a political resolution to the Eritrean issue, believing that a military solution was impossible. He was called from Asmara, where he was leading the second division of the Ethiopian army, to Addis Ababa before his execution.
