He studied medicine in Berlin and Göttingen, obtaining his doctorate in 1954 and habilitation in 1962. Forster served as a professor of forensic medicine at the University of Freiburg from 1970 to 1988. In the 1970s, he explored how rigor mortis and its dissolution could indicate the time of death in homicide cases, notably suggesting a possible miscarriage of justice in the Vera Brühne case.
