Benny Behr was a Dutch jazz violinist of Jewish descent, born on February 27, 1911, in Groningen. He began violin lessons at the age of eight and joined the Groninger Orkest Vereniging at seventeen. In 1933, he founded the orchestra De Blue Lyres, playing the alto saxophone. During World War II, Behr faced persecution due to his Jewish heritage, was forced into labor, and was detained in Westerbork, but continued to play music. After the war, he became concertmaster for 30 years at the Metropole Orkest and later formed a successful comedic violin duo with his friend Sem Nijveen.
