He is a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) party and served as a member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India, representing Assam's autonomous district constituency. Engti held various ministerial roles under former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, including Minister of State for Personnel and Training (May 12, 1986 - June 4, 1986), Ministry of Public Grievances and Pensions (July 14, 1986 - February 14, 1988), and Planning Ministry responsible for Program Implementation (1987-1989).
