João Batista de Siqueira, known as Cancão, was a Brazilian poet born on May 12, 1912, in São José do Egito. He stopped participating in folk violas in 1950 to focus solely on written poetry. His works have been likened to those of romantic poets like Castro Alves and Fagundes Varela. Cancão had limited formal education and served as an official of justice in his hometown until his death on July 5, 1982.
