She achieved notable success at the 1984 Summer Olympics, winning a gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle alongside fellow American Nancy Hogshead, as they both touched the wall simultaneously. In addition to her individual gold, she also secured two more gold medals as part of relay teams, showcasing her versatility and strength in the sport.
