Along with his collaborator and later wife, Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld, and fellow Dutch astronomer Tom Gehrels, he discovered thousands of asteroids. His academic pursuits were interrupted by World War II, and he could not present his doctoral thesis until 1952. He passed away on August 24, 2002, in the same city of his birth.
