Edward Donald Slovik (February 18, 1920 – January 31, 1945) was a soldier in the United States Army during World War II and the only American soldier to be tried and executed for desertion since the American Civil War. Despite over 21,000 American soldiers receiving various penalties for desertion during WWII, including 49 death sentences, Slovik's was the only execution carried out. Military trials were conducted extensively during this time, with many cases resulting in lighter sentences, but Slovik was uniquely sentenced for a purely military offense.
