David B. Shear is an American diplomat born on May 25, 1954. He served as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs from July 2014 to June 2016. Shear was the United States Ambassador to Vietnam from 2011 to 2014 and has held various positions in the U.S. State Department since 1982, including postings in Sapporo, Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, and Tokyo. He is a graduate of Earlham College and holds a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University.
