David Freeland Parmelee was an American ornithologist known for his extensive research on Arctic and Antarctic birds. Born on June 20, 1924, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, he served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 before pursuing higher education, culminating in a PhD. Parmelee worked at Emporia State University and then the University of Minnesota, where he held various academic and administrative roles, including professor and curator. He published over 120 articles on avian studies and was a member of several ornithological societies. He passed away on December 16, 1998, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
