Denys Parsons (March 12, 1914 - July 3, 1995) was a British author known for inventing a simple yet imprecise method of musical notation in 1975, aimed at indexing musical themes. The idea of a dictionary for musical themes originated in 1948 with Harold Barlow and Sam Morgenstern, who cataloged thousands of pieces using Anglo-Saxon literary notation. Their method involved transposing themes into C major or minor, but the search for melodies was complicated by multiple possibilities for each. Parsons' code elegantly addressed this indexing challenge.
