Richard Jelinek (March 12, 1914 – February 6, 2010) was an Austrian civil engineer specializing in geotechnics and soil mechanics. He studied under Karl von Terzaghi in Vienna and later became an assistant to him. Jelinek earned his doctorate in 1943 and joined the Technical University of Munich post-World War II, where he became a professor and led the geotechnics institute. He was known for his work on soil mechanics, soil improvement, and addressing the Leaning Tower of Pisa's foundation issues, and he officially retired in 1979 but continued to lead until 1980.
