As the commanding officer of the 1st battalion, The Sikh Regiment, he led his troops in a critical battle for the Kashmir valley facing invading forces. His exceptional service led to him becoming the first recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra, awarded posthumously for his bravery. His battalion was notably the first to be deployed in the conflict, marking a significant moment in Indian military history.
