He has contributed to various satirical newspapers and magazines, and many of his novels have been adapted into films. His notable works include 'Via Gemito,' which won the Premio Strega in 2001. He is also speculated to be the elusive author Elena Ferrante, as suggested by interviews where Ferrante acknowledged the possibility of Starnone being her. Starnone is married to literary translator Anita Raja.
