Donald Devereux Woods was a prominent British microbiologist born in Ipswich on February 16, 1912. He attended Northgate School and graduated from Trinity Hall, Cambridge in 1933, earning his PhD in 1937. Woods joined the Medical Research Council Unit for Bacterial Chemistry in 1939, working at Middlesex Hospital, London. After World War II, he became a reader in Microbiology at Oxford University and later accepted the Iveagh Chair of Chemical Microbiology in 1955, contributing significantly to the field of microbiology until his passing on November 6, 1964.
