Starting as a worker in 1939, he later became a teacher and then a school inspector. He served as the chief editor of the journal 'Pädagogik' and contributed significantly to the development of pedagogical theory in the GDR. Drefenstedt advocated for individualization in education during the 1980s, critiquing the collectivist approaches mandated by education authorities. He published numerous works, contributing to the understanding of pedagogy in the GDR.
