Sir Edward Downes was a British conductor born on June 17, 1924, in Birmingham and passed away on July 10, 2009, in Zurich. Despite leaving school at 15 due to financial issues, he studied English and music at Birmingham University through a scholarship. He began conducting in 1952 at the Royal Opera House, where he notably performed many of Verdi's operas. He also worked with Dmitri Shostakovich. Later, he conducted at the Australian Opera and the BBC Philharmonic, and received several honors including Knighthood in 1991.
