Efim Geller was a prominent Soviet chess player and grandmaster, born on March 8, 1925, and passed away on November 17, 1998. He won the Soviet Chess Championship twice in 1955 and 1979 and was a candidate for the World Chess Championship multiple times throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Geller also claimed the Ukrainian Chess Championship four times during the late 1950s and shared first place in the 1991 World Senior Chess Championship, winning outright in 1992. Additionally, he served as a coach for world champions Boris Spassky and Anatoly Karpov and was an accomplished chess writer.
