Elfriede Blauensteiner (January 22, 1931 – November 16, 2003) was an Austrian serial killer, infamously known as the "Black Widow" in Austrian criminal history. A compulsive gambler, she targeted wealthy, elderly victims to inherit their fortunes, luring them through advertisements. Blauensteiner murdered her victims by administering Euglucon, a diabetes medication, leading them to a slow death by hypothermia. Convicted in multiple murder cases, she received a life sentence. Her story inspired various artistic works, including a film and an operetta. She died of a brain tumor while incarcerated.
