She joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force at 18, serving as a cypher officer during World War II, translating top secret signals in North Africa and supporting air missions in the Seychelles. After the war, she married Oliver Knowles in 1949 and returned to Kenya where they had four sons. Watkins passed away in 2012 at her home in Oxford. She is remembered for her contributions both as a writer and a wartime service member.
