Erik Thommesen was a Danish wood sculptor, born on February 15, 1916, in Copenhagen. He was a self-taught artist and studied zoology. His artistic career began with his debut at the Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling in 1940 and he co-founded the Martsudstillingen, which ran from 1951 to 1982. Thommesen was a member of the COBRA art movement and engaged in discussions on cultural policy. He and his wife, Anna Thommesen, received numerous prestigious Danish art awards, but chose not to accept several as part of their protest against the Danish art establishment.
