Kaarlo Erkki Matti Valaste (1931–1989) was a Finnish drummer and bandleader, recognized as Finland's first internationally acclaimed jazz drummer. He was most prolific during the late 1950s and early 1960s, playing on numerous light music recordings. Valaste was born in the Swedish-speaking region of Ostrobothnia and began drumming at age 15 in the Royal Orchestra. He played with notable Finnish jazz musicians, founded his own band, and was a key figure in numerous recordings. Despite struggles with alcoholism, he continued to perform professionally into the mid-1980s.
