Evelyn Ntoko Mase (1922 – 30 April 2004), later known as Evelyn Rakeepile, was a South African nurse and the first wife of anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela. Born in Engcobo, she trained as a nurse in Johannesburg and married Mandela in 1944. They had four children together, but their marriage faced difficulties due to Mandela's political involvement and allegations of infidelity. They divorced in 1956. Mase opened a grocery store in Cofimvaba and later married businessman Simon Rakeepile in 1998. She passed away in 2004, with her funeral attended by prominent figures including Mandela.
