Frederick Albert Smithies (1929-2018) was a British trade unionist and educator. Educated at St Mary's College, Blackburn and Twickenham, he began his teaching career in Accrington before moving to Northampton. He was active in the National Association of Schoolmasters, becoming its general secretary in 1982. Smithies played a significant role in union leadership, participating in various councils and federations, and retired in 1990, maintaining influence in international education unions until 1993.
