Freda Ahenakew was a Canadian Cree writer and linguist, born in Ahtahkakoop, Saskatchewan, in 1932 and passed away on April 8, 2011. She pursued her education later in life, earning a degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1979 and a master's from the University of Manitoba in 1984. Ahenakew taught Native Studies at the University of Manitoba from 1989 to 1996 and worked as a language advisor for the Prince Albert Land Council. She received an honorary doctorate from the University of Saskatchewan in 1997 and became a member of the Order of Canada in 1998.
