G. E. M. de Ste. Croix was a British historian born on February 8, 1910, in Macao, part of the Portuguese Empire. He specialized in ancient history and was a Marxist. De Ste. Croix was a leading figure in British historical materialism and was a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and its 'Historians' Group'. He was elected to the British Academy in 1972. He passed away on February 5, 2000, in Oxford, South East England.
