She served as a member of the Minnesota Senate from 1982 until her retirement in 2010, representing parts of Hennepin and Wright counties in the Twin Cities area. Olson was the Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor in the 1998 gubernatorial election and sought the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in 1994. She held leadership roles including assistant minority leader and president pro tempore during her tenure.
