He gained recognition for competing at the age of 17 in the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne, Australia. During the Olympics, Onekea participated in the preliminary heats of the men's 400-meter freestyle and the men's 1,500-meter freestyle. He recorded times of 4:41.6 and 19:13.6 in these events but did not advance to the final rounds.
